The Ecological Framework

All data and information provided by the Boreal Information Centre is organized according to the National Ecological Framework for Canada, which is a national standard. The National Ecological Framework is based on an hierarchical stratification of natural ecosystems (see table below). The work of the Boreal Information Centre is primarily focussed on providing boreal forest land-use and conservation data and information at the ecoprovincial and ecoregionial-levels since these two scales are the most useful to most conservation and land-use planning.

Ecozone The top of the hierarchy, it defines the ecological mosaic of Canada on a sub-continental scale. Very generalized ecological units characterized by abiotic and biotic factors.
Ecoprovince A subdivision of an ecozone characterized by major assemblages of structural or surface forms, faunal realms, and vegetation, hydrology, soil, and macroclimate. There are 26 ecoprovinces in the boreal/taiga region of Canada.
Ecoregion A subdivision of an ecoprovince characterized by distinctive regional ecological factors, including climate, physiography, vegetation, soil, water, and fauna. There are 89 ecoregions in the boreal/taiga region.
Ecodistrict A subdivision of an ecoregion characterized by distinctive assemblages of relief, landforms, geology, soil, vegetation, water bodies and fauna.
